PLAYERS from Central Philippine University (CPU) displayed wizardry to dominate the 1st Governor’s Cup Regional International Chess Championship at Robinsons Place mall in Jaro, Iloilo City on Dec. 23.
CPU’s Kris Osward Olvido was hailed the champion in the 17 and Under category. He was followed by Cyril Felrod Telesforo, Jeralp Losanes, Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem, and Joshua Lawrence Tanate.
Olvido took home P4,000 cash and a trophy. The second and third placers got P3,000 and P1,500, respectively, while the fourth and fifth placers, P500 each. All lower four players received medals.
CPU’s Checy Aliena Telesforo topped the 13 and Under, defeating Adrian De Luna, Jay Ray Alvior, Kimberly Colaste, and Anton Benedict Bebit.
Telesforo received P3,000 cash and a trophy. De Luna and Alvior had P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, plus medals, while Colaste and Bebit had P500 and a medal each.
In the 9 and Under, Muellene Ymber Babao captured the title. Placing behind him were Save Yiel Magoliman, Acer Epelipcia, Jared Malunes, and Jairo Sargado.
Babao took home a P2,000 cash prize and a trophy. Magoliman and Epelipcia had P1,500 and P1,000, respectively, plus medals, while Malunes and Sargado had P500 and a medal each.
“The turnout of this year’s age-group chess tournament is pretty impressive so we are now thinking of making it bigger next year,” said Iloilo Sports Development Officer Ray Cabarles. “This event is our way of discovering future chess players to represent the country.”/PN
