MANILA – Phoenix Fuel Masters posted its first win in the PBA Philippine Cup by defeating Kia Picanto 125-102 last night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Bacolodnon Justin Chua, Matthew Wright and JC Intal led Phoenix (1-1) with 15 points apiece while Angelo Alolino and RJ Jazul had 13 points each.
Fuel Masters surged to a 14-5 start on outside hits by Wright, Jazul and Karl Dehesa. Picanto managed to cut the deficit to 5 but inside conversions by Doug Kramer extended Fuel Masters’ lead 24-14.
Phoenix continued its run in the second quarter to build a 41-21 lead on back-to-back hits by Justin Chua. Picanto countered with its own rally on triples by Eric Camson to come to within 40-53 at the half.
Picanto came to as close as 7 points early in the third quarter but Fuel Masters distanced anew with conversions from Alolino, Wright and Jason Perkins for an 88-69 lead.
Fuel Masters maintained its aggression early in the fourth quarter with baskets from LA Revilla, Perkins and Dehesa before building its largest lead 125-99 on 6 straight points by Mike Gamboa.
“We know Kia is not a pushover,” said Fuel Masters head coach Louie Alas. “Kaya pinaghandaan namin iyong game namin and we made sure we don’t commit the mistakes in our previous match.”
Rashawn McCarthy finished with 22 points, including three triples, while Camson and Philip Paniamogan had 15 and 13 points, respectively, for Picanto (0-2)./PN
