KALIBO, Aklan – The municipal government will strictly impose the smoking ban in this capital town starting Feb. 1 next year.
Before that, a series of awareness activities will be conducted, according to Councilor Cynthia Dela Cruz, chairwoman of the Sangguniang Bayan committee on environment.
“These activities are part of the week-long Kalibo Santo Nino Ati-Atihan Festival in January,” said Dela Cruz, who is also a member of the town’s anti-smoking council.
She added that since many people will attend the festival, it will be a good avenue to inform the public about their plan.
The town council wants to make Kalibo “smoke-free” by enforcing President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Order (EO) 26, which aims to establish smoke-free environments in public and enclosed spaces across the country.
The EO prohibits smoking in “enclosed public spaces and public conveyances, whether stationary or in motion, except in DSA (designated smoking areas).”
Duterte signed the EO in May this year.
The municipal government will fine violators up to P2,500, depending on the level of their offenses, Dela Cruz said.
Earlier, the Smoke-Free Kalibo campaign was launched, gathering around 300 participants coming from different sectors: the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Aklan Chapter, Kool Earth-Kalibo, Municipal Health Office, local government officials, and schools, among others.
A walkathon from Magsaysay Park to Pastrana Park was held as part of the launch. Anti-smoking advocates then gave their speeches./PN
