BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio Leonardia issued a local executive order convening the Bacolod City Local STI/HIV/AIDS Council.
STI/HIV/AIDS stands for sexually transmitted infection/human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
According to Leonardia, the executive order was issued to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, like HIV infection and AIDS, in the city.
“AIDS is a disease that recognizes no territorial, social, political, and economic boundaries for which a cure has yet to be discovered,” part of the order stated.
A report from the AIDS Core Team of the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital showed that from 2007 to October 2017, there were 304 recorded cases of HIV and AIDS in Bacolod City, the second highest in Western Visayas.
City Ordinance 468 series of 2008 created the Bacolod City Local STI/HIV/AIDS Council to “help ensure efficient and effective delivery” and monitoring of the anti-HIV and AIDS program in the city.
The executive order also cited Article 5 Section 6 of the Bacolod City Gender and Development Code, which mandates that the city government must “assist, initiate, support, and provide for programs, projects and activities that promote awareness about HIV and AIDS, and ensure the access to medical, social and psychological support for persons with HIV and AIDS through the duly consulted local AIDS Council, also in pursuance of the Child Youth and Family Welfare Code of the city.”
Leonardia, being the city mayor, is the overall chairperson of the Bacolod City Local STI/HIV/AIDS Council./PN
