MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte was once again urged to sign a waiver on bank secrecy to allow scrutiny of his wealth.
Duterte “must address this issue squarely once and for all,” said Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, a fierce critic of the President. “If he has nothing to hide, he should bare it all and sign the waiver.”
Trillanes said he will file today a resolution calling for a Senate investigation into the alleged ill-gotten wealth of Duterte and his family.
The inquiry will look into, among others, the bank transactions of the President and daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio, mayor of Davao City.
According to Trillanes, the investigation will uncover their “undisclosed covered transactions” exceeding P500,000 in possible violation of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Duterte “has been dilly-dallying in his statements and … bluffing the people by publicly ordering the AMLC (Anti-Money Laundering Council) to investigate his alleged bank accounts,” said the senator.
“We all know that the AMLC would not do it unless he (Duterte) signs a waiver on bank secrecy,” Trillanes said.
Malacañang dismissed Trillanes’ claims as “lumang tugtugin” (old music).
“Election pa iyan! Para ngang gasgas na plaka (Such claims date back to the 2016 elections. He sounds like a broken record),” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque told Panay News.
Trillanes also questioned Malacañang’s order to suspend Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Carandang for 90 days for the latter’s disclosure of documents on Duterte’s bank transactions that the anti-graft body was looking into. Carandang claimed the documents were provided by the AMLC but the council denied this.
“What is there to leak when they deny such documents being released by AMLC?” Trillanes said.
Trillanes first alleged in April 2016 that Duterte had more than P200 million in a bank and he failed to disclose this in his annual declaration of assets and liabilities in 2014.
“The public wants to know the truth, and it’s in the hands of the Senate to uncover it,” Trillanes said./PN
