BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia conferred businessman and singer-songwriter Jose Mari Chan the distinction of being this city’s “honorary mayor.”
The city council previously approved a resolution declaring Chan as Bacolod’s “adopted son and honorary mayor.”
Leonardia issued a local executive order in support to the city council’s Resolution No. 81 series of 2018.
Chan is the fifth “adopted son” of Bacolod. The others are Lucio Tan, Eduardo Cojuangco, John Gokongwei, and Henry Sy.
Declaring Chan as Bacolod’s adopted son and honorary mayor is part of the city’s 13th Bacolaodiat Festival, a local event slated on Feb. 15 to 18 to welcome the Lunar New Year.
According to Leonardia, Chan has kept alive the sugarindustry in Negros Occidental amid its past crisis.
Bacolod, as a capital city, benefited from Chan’s “sustaining effort in engaging and supporting the sugar industry in the province,” the order stated.
Leonardia said the city recognizes Chan as a businessman who has contributed to the economic well-being of Negros Occidental./PN
