
BACOLOD City- The members of the city council or Sanggunian Panglalawigan (SP) in Bacolod City have approved the request to hold cockfighting activities in a licensed cockpit arena situated in Barangay Mansilingan, despite the coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19) pandemic.
Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran disclosed that on Wednesday, during the regular session of the city council they passed two separate resolutions granting the request of the two cockfighting promoters (name withheld) to hold such activities.
A resolution authored by Councilor Al Victor Espino, Chairman of the committee on ways and means cited that the promoters will stage a cock “Timbangan” on April 2, for the benefit of MRRP Day Center in this city’s barangay Handumanan.
And, on April 8, for the benefit of Bayan Muna Day Center of Barangay Handumanan also.
Familiaran said, “the city now allows cockfighting activities because we are now in Alert Level 1 status in consideration of the COVID-19 situation.
But, he reminds the public that they must practice observance of the health protocols such as wearing of facemask; hand sanitizing; and social distancing.
Before the passage of the resolutions, Councilor Renecito Novero raised the question, is cockfighting allowed during this election campaign period?
Councilor Dindo Ramos, chair of the committee on laws answered that cockfighting activities in the cockpit arena are prohibited only before and on the day of the election.
