BACOLOD City – The prices of pork in Negros Occidental are reportedly going up due to a supply shortage.
Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) head Dr. Placeda Lemana said hog mortalities over the last few months dented the local supply.
The current price of live-weight hogs is P140 to P150 per kilogram, Placeda added.
Pork, meanwhile, is being sold at P280 to P290.
According to Lemana, hog raisers complained that the buying price for live hogs at the height of the hog mortalities was too low, but the price pork in the market was not dropping.
The PVO head also confirmed the price hikes, noting that some areas in the province had to cull their pigs to avoid the spread of African Swine Fever and hog cholera.
She already asked hog raisers to temporarily halt supplying pork outside the province to prepare for an expected high demand in the coming months. (Watchmen Daily Journal)
