ILOILO – A police officer died after he was stabbed by a construction worker in Barangay Pakiad, Oton, Iloilo at 11:45 p.m. on Monday, December 16.
The 40-year-old Staff Sergeant Erwin Calubayan, a resident of Barangay Balabag, Dumangas town, sustained a severe stab wound on the right side of his abdomen. He passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Lieutenant Colonel Abner Jordan, chief of the Oton Municipal Police Station, identified the suspect as Dan Garferio, 40, a resident of Barangay Siniba-an, Dingle.
Prior to the incident, the suspect was drinking with his companions near a marketplace while the victim was drinking on the opposite side.
Based on initial information, Calubayan was about to go home when Garferio approached and stabbed him.
Jordan said the suspect was arrested after a commotion ensued, during which he was shot in the abdomen by the victim.
Garferio was also taken to the hospital and is currently under hospital arrest.
Oton police were still investigating the motive behind the incident while preparing the charges to be filed against the suspect./PN
