NEGROS Occidental – Mount Kanlaon on Negros Island emitted ash anew on Sunday morning, October 12, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
The volcano’s ash emission from 6:47 a.m. to 7:17 a.m. was recorded by the IP camera of the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory – Canlaon City.
“This event generated grayish plumes that rose up to 300 meters above the crater before drifting to the southeast,” PHIVOLCS said.
It added that Alert Level 2 remains in effect for the volcano which sits between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.
Meanwhile, the 24-hour monitoring of the volcano said that three volcanic earthquakes were logged on October 11.
PHIVOLCS said a total of 2,968 tons of sulfur dioxide were released, which was more than the October 10 release of 1,238 tons.
Last Sunday, October 5, grayish plumes rising about 500 meters were also seen above the Kanlaon crater before drifting southwest.
Authorities still strictly prohibit entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) and the operation of any aircraft near the volcano. PHIVOLCS warned of potential hazards, including sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, and precursor magmatic activity might occur.
Residents near Kanlaon are urged to strictly comply with instructions from authorities as the volcano remains under increased alert./PN
