BACOLOD City — A resident of Bago City, Negros Occidental has been convicted and jailed after stealing a two-meter electrical wire from a streetlight at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC), highlighting the city’s intensified campaign against even minor theft incidents.
The accused, Anthony James Arnaiz, pleaded guilty before the Municipal Trial Court in Cities Branch 5 to theft under Article 308 in relation to Article 309 of the Revised Penal Code, according to a press statement from the Bacolod City Communications Office (BCCO).
The incident occurred on March 20, when Arnaiz took a two-meter electrical wire from a streetlight, along with a backpack, from within the government center grounds.
He was apprehended by a security guard from the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), who was authorized by the city government to file the case before the prosecutor’s office.
The local government, under the administration of Mayor Greg Gasataya, promptly pursued charges, signaling a firm stance against theft regardless of the value of the stolen items.
According to Atty. Jose Marty Go, secretary to the mayor, the case reflects the city’s commitment to cracking down on petty crimes.
“The city has decided to pursue the case against Arnaiz to show that we are serious in running after those responsible for committing petty crimes within the vicinity of the BCGC,” Go said.
Following the incident, Mayor Gasataya directed POSO to strengthen security measures, particularly around the perimeters of the BCGC, to prevent similar offenses.
