THE DEPARTMENT of Energy (DOE) said that government interventions to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict helped prevent a potential P7 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) increase in electricity rates.

Beyond tax-related proposals, the DOE said it continues to advance measures that directly address electricity prices amid the Middle East conflict.

“Through its ongoing interventions, the DOE has helped avert a potential P7 per kilowatt-hour increase in electricity prices, providing immediate relief to consumers,” it said in a statement Wednesday, May 6.

Among these measures is the strengthening of the DOE’s Priority Dispatch policy to cushion the effects of oil supply disruptions.

Under this policy, renewable energy plants, such as solar, wind, and run-of-river hydro, are prioritized in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), reducing reliance on imported fuel and limiting exposure to price spikes.

The DOE said it remains committed to long-term solutions that will make electricity more affordable and reliable by expanding power supply, accelerating renewable energy development, and strengthening the country’s grid infrastructure.

“Lasting affordability must be built on stable supply, cleaner energy, stronger infrastructure, and sound policy,” it said, adding that it will “continue working with Congress, economic managers, regulators, industry players, and consumer groups to ensure that power sector reforms deliver real, sustainable, and inclusive benefits to the Filipino people.” (PNA)
