CAPIZ — Amid concerns over increasing seismic activity, disaster management authorities in Capiz are intensifying preparedness measures to ensure communities are ready in the event of a strong earthquake.
Engr. Reynaldo Antioquia, Science Research Analyst of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in Capiz, said the agency continues to work closely with local government units (LGUs) in conducting regular inspections of buildings and infrastructure across the province.
Antioquia emphasized the importance of strict compliance with building and construction standards to minimize the impact of earthquakes on lives and property.
“Ensuring that our buildings can withstand seismic movements is vital in reducing risks to lives and property,” he said.
He also urged the public to actively participate in earthquake drills, noting that such exercises help individuals and communities develop preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters.
Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 6 has assured the public of its readiness to respond should a major earthquake strike Western Visayas, particularly areas near the Negros Fault.
In a local radio interview, OCD Regional Director Raul Fernandez said the agency continues to monitor high-risk areas where seismic activity is more likely to occur.
Fernandez said the OCD is undertaking comprehensive hazard mapping to identify vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure that could be affected by a strong earthquake.
The hazard mapping initiative is aimed at developing targeted response strategies and ensuring the efficient allocation of resources during emergencies.
Aside from hazard mapping, the OCD regularly conducts earthquake drills and disaster preparedness activities in vulnerable areas, including hospitals, schools, and densely populated communities.
These exercises provide practical training for residents, students, and facility personnel, enabling them to respond appropriately and efficiently during seismic events.
As part of its preparedness campaign, OCD Region 6 continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant and informed about earthquake risks.
The provincial government of Capiz likewise urged residents to participate in disaster preparedness programs, familiarize themselves with evacuation procedures, and prepare emergency kits containing essential supplies to ensure the safety of their families in times of crisis. /PN
