KALIBO, Aklan – Most dengue patients in Aklan are teenagers.
From Jan. 1 to Sept. 3 this year, the province posted 1,035 cases — 82.86 percent higher than the 566 cases in the same period in 2015.
Majority of the patients (353) were 11 to 20 years old. Patients aged 1 to 10 years old ranked second in number at 287.
This capital town had the most number of cases with 225, records from the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance and Response Unit showed.
There is clustering of cases — three or more cases identified in a barangay in past four consecutive weeks — at the poblacion.
Malay town had 91 cases; Banga, 72; Ibajay, 71; and two nearby non-Aklan towns covered by the Provincial Health Office, 69.
New Washington had 62 cases; Numancia, 60; Madalag, 56; Nabas and Libacao, 45 each; Tangalan, 42; Altavas and Buruanga, 34 each; Balete and Malinao, 29 each; Batan, 28; Makato, 27; and Lezo, 16.
To combat the spread of the disease, the provincial health officer Dr. Cornelio Cuachon Jr. appealed to the public to employ the 4S strategy:
* search and destroy mosquito breeding sites
* seek early consultation
* self-protection measures, and
* say no to indiscriminate fogging.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan has proposed the creation of a task force that will carry out measures against dengue. A public hearing on the proposal was held on Sept. 15. (PIA/PN)
