ILOILO City – Western Visayas has started observing the 2016 National Maritime Week.
A short program and an exhibit of photos of maritime equipment and vessels at SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao district kicked off the celebration on Monday.
This year’s theme is “Shipping: Indispensable to the World.”
“The theme focuses on the critical link between shipping and global society, and [raises] awareness on the relevance of the maritime industry in international shipping and trade,” said Port Manager Rosenda Sumagaysay of the Philippine Ports Authority’s (PPA) Port Management Office – Panay/Guimaras (PMO-PNG).
Nearly 90,000 vessels in more than 150 nations manned by a million seafarers of various nationalities have a total carrying capacity of some 1.75 billion tons of import and export goods worldwide.
The PMO-PNG collaborated with maritime industry partners in the region in laying down activities that raise the importance of shipping in supporting and sustaining the global society.
Activities this week include search and rescue training in Tigbauan, Iloilo; tree and mangrove planting in six PPA terminal ports; medical and dental mission for 200 indigent families from four barangays around Fort San Pedro; Maritime Skills Olympics; and Basic First Aid Information Drive on the Safety of Fisherfolk.
One of the highlights is the Simulation of Search and Rescue: Oil Spill Response Demonstration at the Iloilo River wharf by the Philippine Coast Guard on Sept. 30.
The National Maritime Week is observed by virtue of Proclamation No. 1094, which consolidates the holding of the National Seafarers’ Day, National Maritime Day and National Maritime Week. (PNA)
