BORACAY – A multipartite agreement on the operation and maintenance of the first phase of the Boracay Island Drainage Project has been signed.
With an initial budget of P220 million, the two-phase drainage project aims to solve the flooding problem in the island. It is funded by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), an agency under the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Phase I aims to help ease flooding within the 11-hectare central business district of Boracay.
Atty. Guiller Asido, TIEZA chief operating officer, said Phase II of the project is already underway.
Phase II includes the construction of a pipeline that will divert the treated drainage water into a wetland in Sitio Lugutan.
At present, treated water is discharged into Bulabog Beach.
Phase II is expected to be completed by last quarter of next year.
The agreement signing on Nov. 14 was headed by TIEZA. Others in the agreement were the Boracay Island Water Company (BIWC), Aklan provincial government, local government unit of Malay, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Boracay Foundation Inc., Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Boracay and Boracay Windsport Association, Inc.
As part of the agreement, BIWC shall be in-charge of the maintenance of the drainage network and its pumping station. (PNA)
