ROXAS City – Local government units (LGUs) must protect the Panay River and other rivers in Capiz, Gov. Antonio del Rosario stressed.
All government officials must be active in the said cause; otherwise, they will be charged, said del Rosario.
The Panay River Development Council will issue notices to “nonperforming” LGUs.
A third notice would mean getting hauled to the Office of the Ombudsman, said the governor.
Del Rosario said the council already sent two notices, but he did not specify what LGU.
Mayors are the highest-ranking officials that could get sued if an LGU is found remiss in its duty to protect rivers, said del Rosario.
LGUs should lead the removal of illegal structures along Panay River with the help of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Public Works and Highways and Panay River Task Force, the council said. (Capiz Aksyon News Center/PN)
