ILOILO City – A contractor and a barangay captain were arrested during a raid for illegal guns and ammunitions in the village of Calao in Dumangas, Iloilo.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 6 identified the suspects as Calao village chief Oscar Pueren and Ryan Catanyag, the contractor.
The raid was conducted around 10 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Catanyag’s house. CIDG operatives recovered a 12-gauge shotgun with 12 ammunitions, .38 revolver with five ammunitions, .45 pistol with 22 ammunitions, a .9mm pistol with 47 ammunitions, three holsters, and a pouch.
Catanyag failed to present pertinent papers to support his legal ownership of the firearms and ammunitions, said Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, CIDG chief.
“Our initial investigation showed that some of these firearms were merely pawned to him. We have yet to identify the real owners of the guns,” Tayaba said.
Pueren, on the other hand, yielded a .9mm pistol and 13 ammunitions. He admitted having no permit to possess them, said Tayaba.
Neighbors claimed of incidences of illegal discharge of firearm thus the CIDG thought of raiding Catanyag’s house, said Tayaba.
At the time of the raid, however, Pueren was there and he had a gun.
“The barangay captain was unruly and he obstructed our operation. When our operatives frisked him, they found a gun,” said Tayaba.
Catanyag and Pueren face charges for violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. Both were detained at the lock-up cell of CIDG Region 6.
