ILOILO City – A policeman and a civilian were hit when the service firearm of another officer accidentally went off in Barangay Poblacion, Anini-y, Antique yesterday, a police report showed.

Police Officer 1 Joel Ponje, 26, of the Anini-y police station and Rex Ryan Gecaraya, 26, of the same village were hospitalized.

Ponje and Police Officer 3 Rolando Sta. Ana were pacifying a commotion at around 1:49 a.m. when the accidental firing happened.

A misunderstanding between a drunken Gecaraya and a group of bystanders in front of the municipal hall led to the commotion, the police report stated.

During response, Sta. Ana’s service firearm fell and went off, hitting Gecaraya on the left thigh and Ponje on the lower right buttock./PN
