MANILA – The Alaska Aces maintained its streak in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup with a 101-86 victory over the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
RJ Jazul led the way with 16 points, including five three-point baskets, for the Aces, which moved up to a 3-2 slate along with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Star Hotshots, TNT Katropa and Blackwater Elite.
Calvin Abueva chipped in 12 markers, while Chris Banchero and Vic Manuel contributed 10 points apiece for the Aces, which stretched its winning run to three despite playing sans Joachim Thoss and Siverino Baclao.
From a slim lead in the opening quarter, the Aces went on a scoring run behind Jaypee Mendoza and Manuel for a 20-11 edge. It later grew to 27-15 at the end of the period after a triple by Anthony Dela Cruz.
The Aces lead reached 17 points early in the second frame but the Kings was able to trim it to 44-35 on a triple by Kevin Ferrer. The Aces, however, answered behind Jake Pascual and Jvee Casio to make it 59-44 at halftime.
The Aces became aggressive at the start of the third canto behind Abueva to buil a 20-point game. The gap later grew to its largest at 92-72 on conversions from Jazul, Pascual and Chris Exciminiano.
“I was a little surprised,” said Aces head coach Alex Compton. “But I really thought there were large stretches that our guys had tremendous defensive activity. We did a good job in the half court, scrambling and taking away their shots.”
Ferrer finished with a career-best 19 points, while Japeth Aguilar added 12 markers for the Kings, which slid down to fifth place in the standings with a 2-3 win-loss slate to tie with the Phoenix Fuel Masters./PN
