ILOILO – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) has approved a resolution urging the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 to take immediate actions to prevent falling debris at the Ungka Flyover which is undergoing repair.
On November 27, taxi driver Werner Siojo, 49, of Barangay Balabag, Pavia, Iloilo reported that debris fell on his vehicle, damaging the roof and windshield.
More recently, on December 7, a police officer, Frank J. Sanchez, 35, from San Miguel town, reported sustaining a damaged helmet and shoulder pain after debris struck him while he was on his motorcycle beneath the flyover.
The resolution also asked DPWH Region 6 to investigate the incidents.
“There might be more safety concerns at the flyover that remain unreported,” said SP member June Mondejar, who chairs the Committee on Public Order and Security.
The Ungka Flyover was constructed to ease traffic congestion at Barangay Ungka II, Pavia. However, structural defects were discovered, prompting repairs that are still underway.
The SP Committee on Public Order and Security and the Committee on Infrastructure set for next week a joint hearing on the “falling debris” incidents.
