MANILA – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recommended to President Rodrigo Duterte the extension of martial law in Mindanao.
Duterte declared martial law in the entire southern region on May 23 after members of the Maute group attacked Marawi City.
The proclamation is set to end on Dec. 31.
“Threat has been degraded in terms of capability and manpower but those who survived that threat are still trying to recruit members,” AFP spokesperson Major General Restituto Padilla said in a press briefing yesterday.
“We don’t want these groups to come back with a vengeance,” he said.
Padilla also cited threats from groups like the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the National People’s Army as bases for their recommendation.
“Troops continue to battle BIFF members in Lanao and Cotabato, and the ASG in Sulu, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi,” he said. “We also need to be prepared for possible attacks by the Left.”
Minority senators opposed the recommended martial law extension.
“Lifting military rule, specifically in Marawi, will hasten the return of affected residents to their homes, according to its citizens,” said Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Franklin Drilon, Risa Hontiveros, Francis Pangilinan, and Antonio Trillanes IV.
The Philippine National Police earlier pushed for the extension of martial law in Mindanao for one year.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque previously said Duterte will decide on the martial law in Mindanao before Dec. 15./PN
