ILOILO City – Agriculture secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol warned Western Visayas mayors against falling to persons pretending to be affiliated with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and proposing projects then asking money.
Pinol was in Iloilo on Aug. 8 and 9. He distributed agricultural support to farmers in Guimaras and Iloilo and had a dialogue with local officials led by Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr., mayors Geffrey Alonsabe of Alimodian, Mariano Malones of Maasin and Jesry Palmares of Passi City.
Alonsabe sought clarification from Piñol about a group of persons claiming to be from the Secretary’s office and peddling supposed farm-to-market road projects from the DA.
“Without my knowledge, they arranged the contractors. I learned lately that they asked for 10 percent of the supposed P100-million road project. Nag-initial sila one million, then gusto nila padungangan sang five percent kay i-release na kuno ang pondo,” Alonsabe told Piñol.
It was at this point that he doubted the persons, said the mayor.
Piñol said he was not surprised. Scammers also used his name in Zamboanga, Surigao and other provinces, he said.
“If you fall for them, kaluluoy ka,” Piñol said.
He advised mayors to make sure the people they are dealing with are indeed from the DA.
“Waay takon gapangayo…I have never been involved in anything like this, and I will not allow it,” he stressed./PN
