MANILA – Pilferage at airports will become a “huge security threat” if left unabated, according to Sen. Grace Poe.
Poe, chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Public Services, sought an investigation into what she called the spate of luggage theft at the country’s airports.
According to the senator, this wrongdoing may lead to loss of confidence of potential tourists and investors.
Last month an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Canada lost P82,000 worth of items to pilferers at the Clark International Airport.
Due to the incident, six employees of the aviation service provider Miascor assigned at that airport were fired and facing administrative charges.
President Rodrigo Duterte also ordered the termination of the contract of Miascor.
But these did not stop airport thieves from victimizing OFWs.
On Feb. 9 a domestic worker complained about the damaged lock and zipper of his luggage and the missing items inside it at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
“While administrative and criminal charges have been filed against the perpetrators who happened to be employees of a ground handling firm, this (incident at the Clark airport) failed to serve as deterrent for similar incidents to occur,” Poe said in Senate Resolution No. 644.
“The government needs to protect its people, especially OFWs, who work so hard to earn a living,” she said./PN
