The Senate is looking into consumer reports of the disappearance of prepaid mobile credits, including mischarges, hidden charges and errors in opt out mechanisms.

MANILA – Senators are looking into reports of disappearing credits (load) of prepaid mobile users.

The Senate Committee on Science and Technology will hold a hearing on Monday, March 5 to identify steps to prevent incidents of “nakaw (stolen) load,” Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV said on Sunday.

The committee must assess the capacity and readiness of the Department of Information and Communications Technology to carry out rules protecting mobile subscribers, said Aquino.

“We cannot ignore these consumer reports of the disappearance of prepaid mobile credits, including mischarges, hidden charges and errors in opt out mechanisms,” he said in Senate Resolution No. 595.

Around 126 million of the country’s 130 million mobile phone owners are prepaid subscribers, according to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

Huwag natin hayaang manakawan ng pera ang ating mga kababayan,” the senator said.

He also called on the Department of Trade and Industry and the NTC – both mandated to protect prepaid mobile service consumers – to “sufficiently facilitate and address consumer complaints.”

“Let’s check and ensure that our government agencies and regulators are equipped with the systems, equipment and technical capacity to determine the compliance of telcos,” he said./PN
