Aklan dengue cases reach 5,320 – PHO

KALIBO, Aklan – The number of dengue cases in this province already reached 5,320 – a record high according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Dr. Cornelio Cuachon, Provincial Health officer 2, said they have recorded 23 dengue-related deaths as of September. The latest was a nine-year-old girl from Barangay Manoc-Manoc, Boracay Island, Malay.

“We are now on the 39th Morbidity Week from January to September of this year. Dengue cases have so far decreased from 500 cases (for each month) two months ago, and now were down 3 to 4 cases a day,” Cuachon added. “(But) we are still vigilant and on alert especially in Kalibo and Malay areas.”

The towns of Kalibo and Malay each recorded three deaths. Aside from dengue, the PHO is also monitoring two minors suspected with polio.

“One is a three-year-old boy from Makato town and another is a two-year-old boy from Malinao. While both of them were reported to have been vaccinated by polio, their tool samples were sent to the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine to determine their health status,” Cuachon said, adding that both of them manifested signs of polio disease such as initial paralysis and low immunity./PN
