KALIBO, AKLAN – In a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), classes of schools in Aklan have been suspended.

Gov. Florencio Miraflores cited the COVID-19 pandemic in his decision to close all private and public elementary, high schools and colleges in this province starting March 16 to April 15 after cases of the virus have been confirmed in Metro Manila.

The widespread closure of educational facilities in Aklan was included in his Executive Order No. 19 on March 15.

In Kalibo, at least 25,000 students will be affected by the complete closure of the schools.

According to Milaflores, the province is heightening its vigilance in order to prioritize the safety and health of residents, teachers and children and avoid the risk of infections amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases across the country.

Gasoline stations, restaurants, drugstores, and bank services, among others in this capital town, meanwhile, are expected to continue operating their services as usual.

Travel from China, Taiwan, Macau and Korea to this province by flight are still unavailable until the spread of the COVID-19 is controlled.

Miraflores already prohibited public and private occasions that can gather mass crowd.
The 2020 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet hosted by the province supposedly next week was also postponed.

A drastic social distancing – keeping a space of 1.5 meters from people and avoiding close contact with them, if possible – are recommended by the government to be practiced in workplaces and churches.

The provincial government already advised that all travellers who had been in Metro Manila and countries with confirmed cases of the COVID-19 in the last 14 days will be subjected to up to 14 days of quarantine. If no symptoms are detected, they will be allowed to isolate in their respective homes but will be monitored by their local health offices and Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams.

On March 13, the Provincial Health Office-Aklan reported ten persons under investigation. Nine of them were negative based on the test results of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Makati City, while the other one is still pending as of this writing.(With a report from Akean Forum/PN)
