MANILA – A professional boxer was found dead in his house in Sitio Guba, Barangay Tigayon, Kalibo, Aklan.
Kalibo municipal police station identified the boxer as the 22-year-old Mark Anthony Macabales.
Macabales committed suicide by shooting himself on the head using an improvised gun, police said.
Macabales’ body was found sprawled on the floor on Wednesday. Beside him was his cellular phone where a “selfie” of him toting the improvised gun on his head was seen.
Billy Joel Lamac, a friend of Macabales, told Panay News that the death of the boxer came as a surprise as he is scheduled to return to boxing this year.
“Nakakagulat talaga dahil kamakailan lang kausap ko pa yan sabi nga niya babalik na siya sa boksing this year. Dapat noong January pa kaso napostpone,” Lamac said.
Lamac added that Macabales, who was under the stable of MP Boxing Gym of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, has temporarily halted his boxing career to pursue his studies.
“Nahinto muna siya sa boxing kasi sabi niya gusto muna nya makapagtapos. Kakagraduate niya lang kaya dapat babalik na siya sa boxing e,” he said.
Macabales ended his boxing career with a 4-7-0 win-loss-draw slate. His last fight was on September 2016 where he was defeated via technical knockout by Roberto Onggocan./PN
