FILIPINO-Norwegian Christian Tio and Duque delos Santos bested their foes to dominate the opening leg of the ICTSI Philippine Kiteboarding Tour Season 5 in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.
Competing for Red Bull, Tio – who traced his roots from Boracay – defeated Abdul Maotaouakil of Morocco and Filipino Dong Manuel to keep the men’s Freestyle title.
The 18-year-old, who recently qualified for the Men’s Elite League 2018, will join the entire tour this season, with next stops in Bantayan Island, Cebu (Jan. 5 to 7), Boracay (Feb. 9 to 11), and Cagbalete Island, Quezon (March 2 to 4).
The first leg was held from Dec. 1 to 3 in Lakawon Island.
Just like Tio, the Malay, Aklan native delos Santos also defended the men’s Twin Tip Racing, beating Julius Non of Caliraya and Mark Jae Cahilig, also a native of Boracay.
Delos Santos represented the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) Team.
Meanwhile, Bong Fernando of Boracay also bested Atte Kappel from Sweden in men’s Master’s Class (aged 40 above) of Twin Tip Slalom Race. Jay Ortiz placed third overall.
Remel Rentillo, also from Boracay, topped the Twin Tip Racing Youth Group besting Frean Yetyet and Mark Magliquian.
The top player after the four legs in this category can earn a slot in the Asian qualifiers for the Olympics in March in Thailand.
In the novice division, Jack Alvarez, Luigi Abiva and Tony Baysa composed the top three in the men’s category.
Mariska Wildenberg (Netherlands), JingJing Gajisan (Philippines) and Kara Leongson (Philippines) topped the distaff side./PN
