MANILA – The Philippines’ softball team settled for second place in the 2017 Pacific School Games at the Adelaide Shores Sports Complex in Australia.
Comprising players mostly from Domingo Lacson National High School in Bacolod City, the squad suffered a stinging 0-10 defeat to Australia’s New South Wales team in the gold medal match.
Among Negrense players in the squad were Neo May Mahinay, Mary Joy Maguad, Chastene Jover, April Rose Gonzales, Glecilyn Alipato, Mea Tubongbanua, Angela Solidarios, and Glory Alonzo.
The Philippines had a strong start in the tournament, beating South Australia (10-0), India (16-0), Victoria (4-0), and New South Wales (5-2). It also won its semifinals match against another Australian squad.
“I am content with the performance of my players,” said head coach Roselle Hulleza.
“In the finals, we were really stunned by the (New South Wales) pitcher,” Hulleza added. “We failed to scout her because she did not play in our previous match.”
The 2017 Pacific School Games ended on Sunday.
The Philippine team returned home on Wednesday. Its eight Negrense players headed straight to the 2017 Palarong Panlalawigan in Negros Occidental./PN
