MANILA – Alaska Aces pulled away from a close first half to score a 102-65 victory over Kia Picanto in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Jeron Teng led Aces’ charge with 23 points and nine rebounds. Carl Bryan Cruz added 16 markers, including a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from outside, while Chris Banchero contributed 11 points.
Veterans Calvin Abueva, Vic Manuel and Elvin Jake Pascual contributed 10 points apiece for Alaska to tally its second straight victory after opening the season with a 0-2 record.
After a poor first quarter performance, Aces gained control of the game in the second frame 29-26. The lead grew 37-29 with baskets from Teng, Manuel and Banchero late in the period.
Aces tightened its defense in the third, holding off Picanto to just 5 points while unloading 36 courtesy of Teng, Manuel, Cruz, and Simon Enciso for a 75-39 spread.
With the already huge lead, Aces continued with its tight defense in the final frame while, at the same time, increasing its edge to its largest at 40 points, 86-46, on consecutive inside hits by Pascual.
“We talked about starting the year with a clean slate. And it’s nice to see everybody stepping up on the floor,” said Aces head coach Alex Compton. “We have to play wilder on defense, and I guess it has to start with me.”
Rashawn McCarthy finished with 16 points, while Eric James Camson and Ilonggo Ronald Tubid had 15 and 13 points, respectively, for Picanto, which dropped to 0-4 win-loss card./PN
