SANTA Clarita International High School Primes captured the Dinagyang Mayor’s Cup Battle of the Champions title after a 94-90 victory over Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts on Sunday at the Ledesco gym of Hua Siong College of Iloilo in Iloilo City.
Led by Ralph Bajon, Marvin Cuerbo and Franc Steven Tono, Primes dominated Thunderbolts from start to finish to bag the championship in the three-day games that were part of the Dinagyang Festival.
Primes had a strong start with early hits from Cuerbo, Bajon and Giann Paul Nahine for a 21-12 advantage. Thunderbolts responded with its own rally to come to within 39-42 at the half.
Santa Clarita regained its shooting courtesy of Bajon, Tono and Wilmer Dalumpines to build its largest lead 58-45 but Thunderbolts relied on Harold Alarcon to trim the deficit 54-64.
Primes pulled away anew 75-63 midway in the fourth quarter. Thunderbolts came up with a huge run to come to as close as 87-89 but free throws from Bajon and Dalumpines sealed the win for Primes.
Bajon was later named the Finals Most Valuable Player and a part of the mythical team along with Cuerbo, Alarcon, Mark Nonoy of Hua Siong College of lloilo, and Andre Chua of Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu.
“We really prepared for this game kasi tinambakan nila kami (noong elimination round),” Primes head coach Rodel Camacho said. “Lahat noong nakita naming naging problema noong game, sa offense and defense, trinabaho talaga namin dito sa finals.”
“This championship is also special dahil, kahit na hindi ito ang pinakamalakas namin, I have this group of players na masisipag sa loob ng court at masunurin sa mga coaches,” he added.
Also part of the Primes squad were Kingjames Gaborno, Jemar Cepriano, Mark Jimenez, Louwelle Cabasag, Mark Vincent Yutig, Kimrey Servano, Vince Jayme, Earl Tan, Robert Begafria, and Kenth Lindero.
Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu, meanwhile, claimed the third-place trophy following a 71-66 victory over Hua Siong. It was also the school’s lone victory in the tournament./PN
