MANILA — Filipino tennis ace Alexandra Eala powered into the Round of 16 of the WTA Linz Open with a composed 6-4, 6-3 victory over Austria’s Julia Grabher early Wednesday (Philippine time) in Austria, showcasing her poise in crucial moments and reinforcing her rise on the global stage.
Eala’s straight-sets triumph was built on efficiency and execution in key points, allowing her to outplay the higher-risk game of her Austrian opponent despite trailing in certain statistical categories.
While Grabher fired more aces, 3-0, Eala countered with steadier play and better control of rallies. Both players committed three double faults, but the Filipina posted a higher first serve percentage at 60% compared to Grabher’s 55%, giving her more opportunities to dictate points.
The two were nearly even in first-serve success, with Grabher at 69% and Eala close behind at 68%. However, Eala gained a decisive edge on second serve, winning 63% of those points against Grabher’s 57%, allowing her to maintain pressure in extended exchanges.
The turning point came in break-point conversions, where Eala capitalized on three of seven opportunities, while Grabher converted just one of 10 chances — a disparity that ultimately defined the match.
Despite Grabher collecting more receiving points, 30-23, Eala dominated overall output with 76 total points against her opponent’s 65 and controlled the match tempo with a 12-7 advantage in games won.
Eala also imposed her rhythm on serve, winning 53 service points and nine service games, both significantly higher than Grabher’s numbers. She strung together a maximum of three consecutive games, sustaining momentum throughout the contest.
It was the first career meeting between the two players.
Grabher, 29, came into the match ranked No. 87 in the world, with a career-high of No. 54 achieved in 2023. Eala, currently ranked No. 46, reached a personal-best No. 29 earlier this year.
The 20-year-old Victorias City, Negros Occidental native continues to build on a breakthrough 2025 campaign that included her first WTA 125 title in Guadalajara.
