MANILA – Jerwin Ancajas sent Israel Gonzalez crashing to the canvas three times en route to a 10th-round stoppage win to retain his IBF super flyweight title on Sunday at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Despite his impressive United States debut, the 26-year-old Filipino admitted his caliber remains far from that of other world champions but he hopes to land a fight against them soon.
A native of Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Ancajas is one of the protégés of eight-division champ Manny Pacquiao.
Ancajas improved his boxing record to 29-1-1, including 20 knockout wins, while Gonzales dropped to 21-2-0, with eight stoppage wins.
Fifty-five seconds into the opening round, the Filipino immediately made his presence felt as he floored Gonzalez with a left punch.
Ancajas continued his combinations against Gonzalez in the next two rounds before the Mexican tried to push his game in the fourth and fifth frames, but these were not enough to dominate the Filipino fighter.
In the succeeding rounds Ancajas regained his form and nearly tumbled Gonzalez in the eighth with a left hook to the body and a right hook to the head, but the Mexican hanged on.
Ancajas went for the kill in the 10th as he scored his second knockdown at the 1:34 mark with a left straight.
Twenty seconds after Gonzalez stood up, the Filipino again floored him with another left hit, prompting referee Rafael Ramos to end the match./PN
