THE HOTTEST topic now in mainstream and social media is the Philippine Daily Inquirer or PDI’s “Filipino of the Year” who happens to be that rabid anti-Duterte blogger Jover Laurio aka “Pinoy Ako Blog. In the process this Jover Laurio won over the soldiers and policemen who gave their lives to save Marawi City and the republic from ISIS/Maute group.
Really, moi is not surprised. This is the Philippine Daily Inquirer; anybody who is anti-Duterte is a hero for them and Jover Laurio aka Pinoy Ako Blog is the perfect fit.
Never mind that Manila Times columnist Bobi Tiglao wrote:
“I am aghast that veteran print journalists would pay tribute to a blogger whom they would never recruit as a reporter or even a newsroom clerk, who has never written more than three paragraphs arguing a particular point, who has not contributed an iota to the national discourse, nor to journalism. Her expertise – and appeal as a blogger — is limited to bad-mouthing supporters of Duterte with street lingo like “balahura” and “inggitera.”
And moi adds the fact that the Philippine Daily Inquirer made Jover Laurio “Filipino of the Year” obviously shows their devotion to the “cult of the yellow ribbon.” That, and it smells fishy: it got everybody’s attention away from the Dengvaxia “inadvertent genocide” and it seems to work.
“PDI’s selection of a Yellow blogger as ‘Filipino of the Year’ is an insult to the nation.”
Meanwhile in “I Am Iloilo City” the hottest topic is the suspension of Cong. Jerry Treñas
Here are excerpts from the Jan. 7 issue of Panay News:
The Sandiganbayan suspended Rep. Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City for 90 days as the graft charge filed against him in connection with the construction of the Iloilo Press Club (IPC) building undergoes litigation.
That Treñas was charged with violation of Republic Act (RA) 3019, or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, made his preventive suspension “mandatory,” a resolution from the anti-graft court’s Seventh Division stated.
The congressman was accused of giving “unwarranted benefits, advantage or preference” for releasing P500,000 for the construction of the IPC building when he was still the mayor of Iloilo City.
” According to the case information, Treñas signed a memorandum of agreement with the IPC for the construction of the latter’s building in Barangay San Pedro, Molo, Iloilo City.
His act of coursing the money to the IPC from December 2003 to January 2004 allegedly violated Commission on Audit (COA) rules since the IPC was not one of the nongovernment organizations accredited by the city government.
The fund was sourced from the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of Sen. Loren Legarda.
Now here’s the sticky thing: it is common knowledge among the natives of “I Am Iloilo City” and the members of the Iloilo Press Club that businessman and erstwhile politician and now organic farmer Rommel Ynion solely financed the construction of the Iloilo Press Club building.
And here’s the sticky question: if Rommel Ynion did indeed finance the construction exclusively, what happened to the P500,000 that was released by then Mayor Jerry Treñas?

Still from that Jan. 7 Panay News story:
“Section 13 of RA 3019 makes it mandatory for this court to suspend any public officer against whom a valid information is filed charging a violation of said law…or for any offense involving fraud upon government or public funds or property.”
“The preventive suspension is mandatory in character pending a criminal prosecution to prevent the accused from intimidating or influencing witnesses against him.”
Take note folks that this is a “preventive suspension” and not yet a verdict of whether Cong. Jerry Treñas is guilty or not.
No, the good congressman will not go to jail. He will if he fails to pay the P30,000 bail bond once the warrant of arrest comes out and is served.
Moi mentioned in a previous column that another politician in another corruption issue has become boring and uninteresting unless one happens to be that politician or his enemies or supporters.
And this one certainly promises to be one.
Although some people swear that just by being himself Cong. Jerry Treñas is boring and uninteresting enough, that’s not entirely true. He has “flashes of brilliance” like that time a picture of him in combat boots and fatigues went viral; now that is interesting.
So if you see dancing in the streets of “I Am Iloilo City” it’s just the “tribes” practicing for Dinagyang 2018 and not the natives celebrating the suspension of Cong. Jerry Treñas. (brotherlouie16@gmail.com)/PN
