MANILA – Senators have been asked to exercise restraint in their investigation into the rising number of alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) in the country.
Sen. Juan “Sonny” Edgardo also appealed to his colleagues to observe “sobriety” and “mutual respect” while dealing with fellow senators.
“Every little action we take within view of our countrymen, can either elicit respect for, or diminish trust in, the Republic’s hallowed institutions,” Angara said.
He made the comment following the heated arguments during the recent EJK inquiry, where Sen. Leile de Lima was accused of material concealment in connection with the kidnap for ransom case filed against the witness Edgar Matobato.
Angara said that congressional hearings are held to improve law enforcement and the justice system, as well as strengthen the Rule of Law and the respect for the law.
Notwithstanding the “personal attacks” raised against the senators or resource persons, the solon from Aurora noted that the hearings revealed the shortage of training facilities for police, difficulty with policing own ranks, and delays in obtaining a search warrant.
Eight of 10 cases in the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency end up being dismissed, and that it takes a decade to convict drug suspects, he also learned.
“Let us focus on making justice real to our people… Let us work to move our justice system in the right direction, and to restore public trust in our institutions. Justice must be swift and certain and above suspicion,” Angara said./PN
