MANILA – The Senate Committee on Education has been urged to immediately start its hearings on the proposals to increase the salaries and benefits of public school teachers.
Teachers do not get paid enough for their contribution to learning and society, according to Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
“With the dawn of real change initiated by the new administration, now is the perfect time that we give our teachers the proper services that they deserve from the government,” Cayetano said, author of Senate Bill No. (SBN) 75.
Entry-level teachers in the country only get a monthly salary of at least P19,000.
SBN 75 seeks to raise the additional monthly compensation of public school teachers to P9,000 by the end of three tranches in three years.
The lawmaker, whose mother and grandmother were both school teachers, said his measure is “much higher” than the 12-percent salary hike for teachers implemented during the previous administration.
His bill also grants teachers an annual medical allowance of P1,000.
It also directs the Local School Board to provide them with additional support in the form of allowances and other renumeration funded from local school board funds.
“SBN 75 is in response to their clamor for the urgently needed support, considering that their present compensation package places them in a peculiar situation of being just within the present poverty threshold,” Cayetano concluded./PN
