ILOILO – The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) is holding antidrug summits as part of the campaign against substance abuse and trafficking.
In cooperation with government agencies, local governments and other law enforcers, the IPPO has held such meets — which specifically target barangay officials — in around 30 towns already.
The IPPO aims to saturate all of the province’s 42 municipalities and one component city (Passi) by December.
Part of the antidrug summits is defining the roles every barangay, local government and agency official play in the campaign.
“Many of our barangay officials are not aware of their functions and responsibilities in as far as the antidrug campaign is concerned,” said Superintendent Aron Palomo, IPPO spokesperson.
Though the summits, Palomo said they try to make village officials — especially the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils — fully understand their obligations and liabilities.
Speakers from concerned agencies discuss the ill effects of drug use, among other topics.
Among the audiences are local officials, residents, and alleged drug users and/or pushers seeking rehabilitation.
“BADACs play a big role because they identify drug personalities in their areas and assess whether or not a barangay is drug-free,” Palomo said./PN
