ILOILO City – To further show his support to the campaign against illegal drugs, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog donated 4,000 drug testing kits to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
The PRO-6 conducts free drug tests to city public utility vehicle drivers.
Mabilog personally turned over the drug testing kits to Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police director, according to Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.
Mabilog reiterated to Gentiles the city government’s support to the police, said Gorero.
Just this August, President Rodrigo Duterte branded Mabilog a drug coddler. The mayor, however, denied this.
“The 4,000 drug testing kits are really a big help to our free drug tests. We want to make sure that our jeepney and taxi drivers are drug-free,” said Gentiles.
The police general said the tests may be widened to cover the whole region if resources permit.
As of Nov. 14, a total of 1,300 drivers submitted themselves for drug testing in Camp Delgado, the headquarters of the PRO-6.
Drivers under the Iloilo City Loop Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association and Light of Glory taxi were the first to have themselves tested. All passed their tests.
Gorero said the PRO-6 would accommodate around 300 drivers for drug testing each day.
Drivers who pass the test are issued with identification cards (ID) indicating such. The cards contain the drivers’ names and photos, too.
The ID is valid for six months. The driver must take another test to secure a new ID.
Gentiles said drivers who fail the test will undergo free rehabilitation in Camp Delgado./PN
