ILOILO City – Officers at the helm of antidrug operations must be free from prohibited drugs themselves, stressed Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, city police director.
According to Biñas, the 44 members of the City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU) of the Iloilo City Police Office must be tested for drug use.
“I know all of them are dedicated and have good reputations but I want to make sure they’re clean,” he said.
“CDEU officers have undergone a series of trainings and screenings but I will require them to take a drug test for transparency,” he added.
The drug test will be conducted once kits at the Police Regional Office 6 crime laboratory are available, Biñas said.
CDEU members have been trained on, among others, police operational procedures, protocol in the conduct of anti-illegal drug operations and coordination, intelligence cycle, information operations, human rights-based policing, and evidence handling and filing of cases.
Meanwhile Biñas said he will meet with CDEU and intelligence officers and the six district police chiefs for a review of their lists of drug personalities, especially the surrenderers, or those who turned themselves in to the police in the first few months of Oplan Double Barrel, the government’s intensified antidrug crackdown.
“I want to know who our targets are, where they are, the new drug personalities, and the high-value targets,” he said.
Some of the drug pushing suspects the police caught recently were suspected “down lines” of the drug groups once led by the slain drug lords Richard Prevendido and Melvin Odicta, Biñas noted.
In the last days of 2017, police in the city caught five drug suspects and seized 50 sachets of shabu.
Mandurriao police caught two, Molo cops nabbed one, while CDEU operatives arrested another two between Dec. 23 and 29, Iloilo City Police Office records showed./PN
