SAN JOSE, Antique – Unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen shot to death a “high-value” illegal drug suspect in this capital town.
Fruit vendor Julmar “Jojo” Naldo was tending to his stand at Business Park on Villavert-Jimenez Street when attacked around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Superintendent Norby Escobar, municipal police head, said the incident was the first case of a drug suspect killed vigilante-style in San Jose.
Naldo, a 41-year-old resident of Barangay 3, died of gunshot wounds on the back and chest minutes after he was taken to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital on Tobias Fornier Street.
Escobar confirmed that Naldo was an “HVT,” or high-value target, in their antidrug campaign.
Two other people sustained minor injuries during the attack.
Rosaly Saurel, a storekeeper from Hamtic town, was wounded on the right temple, while Lorna Canja, Naldo’s neighbor, was wounded on the legs.
According to the police, they were hit by pieces of the concrete road gutter broken by a bullet that missed Naldo.
Canja said she was talking to Naldo when the suspects fired at the latter.
Witnesses were unable to identify the suspects, one of whom was wearing a helmet while the other had a hood and a facemask on.
Canja said the suspects called Naldo and shot four times before speeding away.
Police said the suspects used a .45-caliber pistol. Seven empty shells were found at the crime scene.
Naldo surrendered during the knock-and-appeal stage of Oplan Double Barrel, the Philippine National Police’s intensified antidrug campaign, last year, Escobar said.
But the San Jose police kept him under surveillance following reports that he continued to peddle prohibited drugs, he said./PN
