SAN JOSE, Antique – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) here reminded the public on the practice of proper hygiene and seeking early medical consultation when sick to avoid complications.

PHO Information Officer Irene Duldoco urged the public to do basic hygiene practice such as washing of hands properly with soap and water and covering of nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Duldoco also encouraged the public to seek early medical consultation when they have symptoms like fever and pain so they will be given early medical attention.

Meanwhile, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Leoncio Abiera Jr. said they are in control of the suspected meningococcemia case in Hamtic, Antique.

He added the health protocol was followed in the management of one suspected case in Barangay Buhang, Hamtic.

He enjoined everyone to remain calm and refrain from sharing misinformation about the case, as it is being addressed properly by health authorities.

The Hamtic Municipal Health Office has already conducted contact tracing and surveillance and those who came in contact with the victim were already given prophylaxis, it said. No new case was reported.

Abiera said meningococcemia is a deadly bacterial disease, however, it is not highly communicable except for those who came close with the victim.

The bacteria can also spread through droplets, coughing, sneezing, and prolonged kissing especially on children.

The PHO urged the public to be responsible social media users and help educate on healthy lifestyle and proper hygiene.(With a report from PIA/PN)
