SAN JOSE, Antique – Antiqueño fishers were prohibited from setting out into the sea as super typhoon “Lawin” battered northern Luzon.
The super typhoon (international name: Haima) hit Cagayan province late Wednesday evening.
But the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) suspended the operation of sea transport at the ports of Culasi, Libertad and Caluya earlier that day.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) was closely monitoring the situation, especially in Pandan and Libertad, coastal towns in the northern part of the province.
Antique may not be along the super typhoon’s path but the PDRRMO could not let down its guard down, said the chief Broderick Train.
So far, “Lawin” had no significant effect on the province since Wednesday night, Train said on Thursday morning.
But flooding remains a threat, he said. “We are especially keeping an eye on the northern towns because of their previous experience with typhoon ‘Karen’ when there was a flash flood.”
Municipal DRRMOs have activated their action centers after Gov. Rhodora Cadiao issued an alert status as part of the preparations in the previous days, he said.
Because the PCG issued an early notice of trip suspension, no passenger was stranded at the ports as of this writing, Train said.
Antique was still expecting thunderstorms and intermittent rainfall. (PNA)
