MANILA – Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Jose Romeo Lazo of the Diocese of San Jose de Antique as the new head of the Archdiocese of Jaro, Iloilo, replacing Angel Lagdameo.

Based on the report from Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website on Thursday, the 69-year-old Lazo was appointed following the resignation of Lagdameo.

The 77-year-old Lagdameo has tendered his resignation from the post upon the mandatory age of retirement for bishops which is 75 years old.
Lagdameo has served the archdiocese since 2000.

Lazo, the 13th archbishop of one of the largest archdioceses in the country, will oversee the Archdiocese of Jaro, which covers the civil province and city of Iloilo and the province of Guimaras.

Lazo will also serve as metropolitan bishop of the suffragan dioceses within the Ecclesiastical Province of Jaro, which includes the dioceses of the cities of Bacolod, San Carlos and Kabankalan in Negros Occidental and San Jose town in Antique.

Lazo was born on Jan. 23, 1949 in San Jose, Antique. He was ordained as priest on April 1, 1975. On Nov. 15, 2003, Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Kalibo, Aklan.
