MANILA – Archer Nicole Tagle bagged a silver medal for the Philippines on Day 2 of the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The 15-year-old Filipina lost the finals of the women’s individual recurve final to the defending champion, Diananda Choirunisa of Indonesia.
Tagle surged to a 3-1 advantage early. She was still ahead 4-2 when the Indonesian converted four straight points to snatch the gold medal.
But Tagle’s silver finish made up for the dismal performances of Gabriel Moreno, Florante Matan and Kareel Hongitan, who were all eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In the men’s rugby sevens, the 2015 gold medalist Philippine Volcanoes ended its campaign empty-handed after suffering a 21-7 defeat to Thailand in the battle for bronze medal.
Volcanoes had a strong start on Saturday with wins over Indonesia (47-5) and Cambodia (47-7) but losses to Malaysia (24-14) and Singapore (21-7) blocked it from reaching the finals.
Also failing to salvage a medal were the Philippines’ women’s team in the rugby sevens and the water polo team, which lost to Indonesia 5-12.
In wushu, Ardee Norlence failed to land a medal finish in the optional dashu/gushu event while Kimberly Macuha also faltered in the optional jianshu event. Daniel Parantac also fell short in the men’s optional tailjian finals.
Paul Marton De La Cruz and Amaya Paz-Cojuangco also failed to take the bronze medal in the compound event after succumbing to Vietnam’s Chau Kieu Kanh and Tien Cuong Nguyen in the battle for third 156-159.
Swimmers Alyssa Marey Salvador and Ruth Desiree Abiera also faltered in the women’s duets technical routine synchronized category, which was topped by Singaporeans Miya Yong Hsing and Debbie Soh Li Fei./PN
