Are you proud to be Pinoy?

I’M SURE you’ve seen the contorted face of Ez Mil on social media promoting his new song “Panalo”.

The song has received mixed reactions from the public. Some are supporting his single, saying they can imagine it being used as the background music of Manny Pacquiao. There are also the usual bashers who think of him as a wannabe Gloc 9 or Francis M.

Though his song is far from an art form, you can’t deny that it is his personal way of expressing his pride of being Filipino. You have to appreciate the message he is trying to portray. At least, even though he faced discrimination in school (he referenced it in the line when he was judged for being “Tisoy”), he still wears his nationality like a badge of honor. This is better than most other Pinoys who are ashamed of their nationality.

Yes, the Philippines isn’t a perfect country but neither is any other out there. As someone who actually lives in another country, I can claim that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. They also have their inconveniences that can be worse than the ones back home.

All we see are the ugly things about our country and I think that’’s pathetic. If the foreigners who gush about how beautiful the Philippines is were to observe how we take our own culture for granted, they would shake their heads in disbelief.

It’s embarrassing how we are taught appreciation of our own country by people who have never even lived here.

I respect people who choose to settle in other countries. We all have the right to live where we want. I just find it sad when they forget the culture they were born with. You have Filipino kids who grew up abroad that don’t even know how to speak the language. Their parents failed to teach them their heritage and I think that is a tragedy for them.

So, laugh all you want at Ez Mil, but at least he has the guts to say what most of us won’t. No matter how messy and imperfect our country may be, it is still ours and we should be glad to call it our own./PN
