MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles are back in the UAAP women’s volleyball finals with a 25-22, 25-10, 16-25, 26-24 win over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the Season 79 semifinals on Sunday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
This marks the sixth-straight season that the Lady Eagles are barging into the UAAP women’s volleyball finale, and in all those championship stints they faced archrival De La Salle University Lady Spikers.
Michelle Morente led the way with 16 points, on 12 attacks, three service aces and a block, for the Lady Eagles, which is aiming to bounce back from its championship defeat to the Lady Spikers last season.
Jhoanna Maraguinot returned from a two-game absence to contribute 14 markers, while Bea de Leon had 12 points for the Lady Eagles, which also got 51 excellent sets from Julia Morado.
The Lady Eagles jumped to an 11-5 lead behind Morente and Maraguinot but the Lady Tamaraws quickly came close, 21-18. The Lady Eagles pulled away to reach match point at 24-19 before Maraguinot closed it with a powerful hit.
Unlike in the opening set, the Lady Eagles was able to sustain its fiery start in the second frame to build a 22-9 edge. Morente and Morado then conspired to finish off the Lady Tamaraws and take a 2-0 set lead.
After losing the third set, the fourth frame became tight between the two teams before the Lady Eagles held on to a 20-17 lead. The Lady Tamaraws responded and forced a 24-all tie before the Lady Eagles leaned on Ana Gopico and Morente to clinch the win.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons finished with 14 points, 10 digs and 12 receptions, while Mary Remy Palma ended her collegiate career with the Lady Tamaraws with 12 points on nine attacks./PN
