Ateneo drubs NU, stays on top in UAAP football

MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles kept its hold on to the top spot of the UAAP Season 81 men’s football tournament after a 2-0 win over National University Bulldogs over at the FEU-Diliman pitch.

Andreas Maniquis and Mark Nacional converted a goal each in the first half for the Blue Eagles, which extended their winning streak to four matches to remain on top with 22 points. The Bulldogs is at sixth spot with 10 points total.

Meanwhile, defending champion University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons turned back the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 2-1.

Kyle Magdato found the back of the net from a goalmouth scramble from a JB Borlongan corner in the 54th minute for the Fighting Maroons to snatch a 2-1 lead.

King Miyagi scored from an Orlan Togores assist to open the scoring for the Fighting Maroons in the 12th minute. Dexter Benecio then struck in the 36th minute for the Growling Tigers to equalize.

Growling Tigers is still at fourth spot with 17 points, while the Fighting Maroons was not far behind with 16 points./PN
