MANILA – Ateneo Lady Eagles avenged another first-round defeat in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball by taking down National University Lady Bulldogs 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 at the San Juan Arena.
Madeleine Madayag led the way with 13 points while Jules Samonte and Jhoanna Maraguinot added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Lady Eagles (6-3), forging a three-way second-place tie after the Saturday night game.
“It was definitely a big comeback,” said Madayag. “As you can see naman, ang ganda ng laro namin – we had receive, blocking and defense. Ang laking improvement from last round.”
Ateneo bucked an erroneous start in the opening set as it erased a 19-16 NU advantage to snatch a 23-21 lead. Two consecutive errors by Lady Bulldogs allowed Lady Eagles to run away with the win.
Unlike in the first set, Lady Eagles had a dominant start in the second set with conversions from Maraguinot and Madayag. The lead reached 18-10 before Lady Eagles thwarted Lady Bulldogs’ runs.
NU tried to stay alive in the third set with an 11-7 start but Ateneo slowly clawed its way back with a 17-6 counter-run from Madayag and Samonte to close the match.
In the other match, Cherry Rondina had 25 points, 13 digs and 13 excellent receptions as University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses halted a five-game slide with a 19-25, 30-28, 25-20, 25-16 win over University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.
“Malaking bagay itong panalo na ito kasi masyado na kaming nabugbog eh. This time, pinipilit naming tumayo,” said Golden Tigresses coach Emilio Reyes. “Ang importante hindi kami susuko. Ibibigay pa rin namin ang pinaka-best namin. Iyong mabuhay ang spirit ng isang Tomasino.”/PN
