THREE-TIME WINNER. HALL OF FAME HONOREE. Iloilo City’s Mayor Raisa S. Treñas, joined by Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office head Velma Jane Lao, receives the 2026 Most Business-Friendly LGU Award and Hall of Fame distinction for Iloilo City during the 52nd Philippine Business Conference and Expo at The Manila Hotel on October 14. More than a recognition, this milestone celebrates the collective efforts of the city government, business community, investors, and Ilonggo entrepreneurs in building a business-friendly city. For Mayor Treñas, the mission continues: to help every business, big or small, grow and succeed — and ensure that economic progress creates more opportunities for every Ilonggo.

Harold Alfred Marshall (center), regional director of the Commission on Population and Development Region 6, attributes the high rates of youth smoking and drinking in the region to peer pressure, family influence, and easy access to alcohol and cigarettes. “If wala ka gapanigarilyo, tawgon ka nga waay gapakisama, you are ‘uncool’… And that is not only limited to smoking, but also drinking, and even perhaps engaging sa mga risqué sexual behaviors,” Marshall adds. Panay and Guimaras islands in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental in the Negros Island Region produce nearly 60% of the country’s blue swimming crab supply, making the regions the backbone of the Philippines’ crab export industry, says Director Remia Aparri of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Region 6. Blue swimming crabs are marine crabs with bluish coloration (commonly seen in males). They are a prized seafood commodity because of their sweet, delicate meat, high meat yield and strong demand from processors, restaurants and overseas buyers, particularly for pasteurized canned crab meat.
